How to check water quality at home
Water can look clear and still not be safe to drink. A few simple checks can give you a good picture of your water quality.
Appearance
Hold a glass of water up to the light. If it looks cloudy or hazy, that could mean mineral deposits, air bubbles, or a microbiological issue. Clear water passes the first visual test.
Smell
Healthy water has no smell. Pay attention if you notice any of these:
- Chlorine smell — normal for city tap water, but concerning if strong
- Rotten egg smell — bacterial activity in your pipes
- Earthy smell — presence of organic matter
Taste
A salty, bitter, or metallic taste means the water is high in certain minerals. Iron is especially easy to detect — it leaves a dry, metallic sensation.
Home testing
Water test strips are available at pharmacies and online. They show pH, chlorine, nitrates, iron, and water hardness.
The safest option
If you don't fully trust your tap water — or if you have a baby at home — ordering drinking water is the safest solution. Water from a certified source goes through laboratory testing before delivery.
Knowing your water source is worth it for your health.
